Standing Desks For Our Classroom: Stand Up For Learning!
My students need to move so they can be better engaged in their learning. Being on their feet at a pair of standing desks (with stools) will help!

My Students
I want to provide my students with a healthy environment while they are at school, something that quality research shows can be made possible by standing desks.
The school I teach at is a fully inclusive school, where students with special needs are fully immersed into the general education population.
It is a wonderful learning community, but the students just don't get enough movement time to live healthily and prepare their minds and bodies for a high quality of living later on in life. The district standard is to have P.E. class just twice a week, and only 25 minutes of recess time every day. The rest of the day my students are sitting, and this is precisely the problem that my students run into. Because my students are sitting so much, their attention dwindles, their health risks for a multitude of different diseases sky rockets, and they can just barely mentally get through the school day. Undoubtedly, all of my students would benefit from these desks, but I would like to point out that the students with special needs and behavior challenges will especially benefit. The chance of their success will be impacted in a very positive way.
My Project
Whether you're fifteen or fifty, there are days where the prospect of sitting for an hour is pure torture! Especially for learners who are still developing physically, emotionally, and mentally. It's already a challenge to focus on content. Learning stretches their brains every day and can cause some mental discomfort (but it's a good thing). Therefore, it's important to reach the learners where they are and, for many, that means finding ways to get them out of their seats and giving them an opportunity to stretch their legs, so they aren't distracted by physical discomfort. For others, especially after lunch, it's hard to concentrate when all the energy is going to digesting food. The standing desks will help learners do what they need to do: focus on the content and reduce distractions.
If my students have an opportunity to improve their ability to learn, simply by being able to stand and wiggle a bit, then that is a win-win all around!
The desks will take a permanent place in my classroom so, will help children for years to come.
While I would love to have a classroom set of these desks in my room, I'm happy to just start out with two so we can begin to stand up for learning!
