Help me give my students enough standing desks for each of them so that they are better able to focus, rather than being stuck in a chair all through class.
Last year, I put in a grant for three standing desks. Those have been loved so deeply this year that two of them have completely broken. I did not anticipate how much students would desire to stand up during class, and how much conflict only having three would cause. I ended up having to make a schedule for who gets the standing desks on which days.
For next year, I am getting pretty ambitious.
I am asking for funding for an entire class set of desks. These will not be fought over and will be used a little more lightly than those I had this year. These specific desks are easily adjustable, so students can choose to sit or stand at any point during the class. They are also pretty affordable per capita compared to other standing desks.
I know this is a large sum of money, but any little bit helps! I have seen firsthand in my classroom the positive impact of standing desks and flexible seating options. Not only does it help with energetic kids who cannot sit still for a class period, but it is also providing students with something they have control over. They will be able to raise or lower their desk at any point without asking. It sounds small, but whenever students are given choices, it leads to feelings of empowerment and confidence.
For context, I work at a very small alternative school in South Carolina. The vast majority of my students were expelled from their schools and sent to mine. My goal is to help them learn to have confidence in themselves, make better decisions, and improve their trajectory. Standing desks are just one small way I will be able to do that in my classroom.
