My students are those who need a little extra help along the way. Working in a Resource Room is a great privilege as I get to see my students shine in a different way from others. Every success is a big success no matter how small in our classroom. Not only do my students struggle with some sort of learning disability, they are also students who attend a Title I school, meaning many families are considered to be in poverty. The classroom culture we create together is one that is a safe and loving environment and is not only for learning but for just being yourself and accepted. We learn together, play together and laugh together.
My Project
I have a number of students each year who have it written into their IEP that they need access to a standing work area. Right now my students who work best standing are standing at short tables or using a clip board. This makes it hard for them to produce quality work and maintain the standing position through various projects. By having a standing desk with a sway bar, my students will be able to stand comfortably and have a fidget item to move with their feet. For many of my students, standing means that they are able to concentrate better at the task on hand, which in turn will increase achievement for the students. The desk will be kept in the classroom with no single person assigned to it, so that all students have the option of using it when needed.
