My Students
My students are lively and energetic. They love to have fun while they are learning. My students love to get out of their seats and spread out in the classroom.
I find that my students are more productive when they are happy and comfortable, and nothing makes them happier than getting away from their traditional student desks.
My 3rd graders are switching classes for the first time this year and they love it! They come to my room for reading and writing. Sometimes is difficult for me to walk through our room with so many little bodies sprawled out happily reading on cushions and writing on lap desks on the floor.
Our school is a very tight-knit little community. Our parents and community members are involved and supportive and the kids benefit from that every day. My students are especially excited this year to use some of the flexible seating options I have been adding to the room. They are in such high demand, we have to use rotation schedules so that everyone gets a chance to use our cushions, lap desks, and stability balls equally.
My Project
When possible, I like to give my students options for alternative seating in the classroom. We currently have stability balls and lap desks for sitting on the floor, but I have noticed recently that many of my students like to stand at their desks to work. I feel bad that they are bent over so far to work on their desk top.
I'd really like to make it easier for them to work standing up by adding some standing work stations to put on top of their student desks.
These portable desktops will allow the students to stand up straighter and be more comfortable when working. They are sturdy enough to hold their Chromebooks and easily removed if a student gets tired of standing.
These standing stations will help students get out of their seats and stay engaged in the lesson. They will rotate to a new student each day and so in addition to our stability ball seating and floor lap desks, students will have the option to get out of their traditional seat every day of the week!
