My Students

I teach Special Education which means my students have a wide variety of individual needs based upon learning disabilities, emotional disabilities, Autism, and other issues such as sensory problems and processing problems. They are a good group of kids who want to learn, pass their classes, and graduate high school. What people need to know is that there is no single intervention that will make every student successful in school, but rather a multitude of "tools in the toolbox" that teachers can choose from to help each one.

My Project

Some of my students are so anxious, ADHD, simply cannot sit still for 42 minutes for a math class, that they are disruptive to others around them. They really need to be able to stand up, move a little, and sometimes wiggle/tap things/or rock a bit. These desks will offer an option for them to do what they need to do to focus and learn while keeping the distractions to peers down. The kick bars are a great addition and my peers tell me they do not make any noise! These desks are a much better option than wiggling students in standard desks where they are not comfortable, distracted from the lesson because all they can think about is moving, and kicking the desk in front of them. The needs of kids in Special Education are vastly different from kids without sensory issues and these kinds of desks definitely help some of those kids!
