This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach at the tip of Texas, bordering Mexico, where my students speak Spanglish. They face many challenges such as dyslexia, special needs, and are socioeconomically disadvantaged, but that doesn't stop them from dreaming big.
They are determined, hard-working children, willing to learn no matter their circumstances.
I teach second-grade, bilingual students who inspire me on a daily basis. These students come everyday excited to start class. They enjoy hands-on activities, crafts, group activities, and especially working with technology. They face many challenges, but they don't let these challenges take over their learning experience.
Many come without knowing English, but with their determination and support from their families, they are able to conquer everything. Many students are economically disadvantaged. However, none of those factors affect these children because they want to learn. It is very satisfying seeing all these children progress throughout the school year.
I work at a very supportive school where students come first. We are all about meeting our children's needs. Our administrators have created a safe, happy environment for everyone at our school: students, staff, teachers, and parents. I love working at the very tip of Texas where my students are very unique and wonderful.
My Project
I was inspired to create this project by the winning project in the If/Then Collection: "Actually, It is Rocket Science!" My students will study positive female role models from the Lyda Hill If/Then Collection such as Sydney Hamilton who is a mechanical engineer, Kelly Korreck who is an astrophysicist, and Jasmine Sadler who is a rocket scientist and aerospace engineer. This will expose students to different STEM careers, females of different races in STEM careers, as well as encourage them to see themselves and their peers in STEM.
My students are super excited to study about space and rockets, especially because our hometown in TX, is the launching site of SPACE X.
This is a great opportunity to nurture their curiosity with a real-life experience and the possibility of touring the facility one day and inspiring them to pursue a field in STEAM.
The height-adjustable desk will give my students space and area needed for hands-on projects and collaborative work. The ability to build models with their 3D printer, write collectively using their iPads, share ideas are some ways this DC Project will help make our classroom special. It will allow students to sit or stand when needed, minimizing immobility and increasing productivity. This would be a great resource for our classroom!
