Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are drawn from the poorest economic sections of the the city, including all of the housing projects and three large trailer parks. Most of our students come from families where they will be the first to go to college, if only they can afford it. For all that, they refuse to give up. For many, the traditional "sit and get" is made more difficult by an inability to sit still for lengthy periods of time.
For many of our students, education is a constant battle.
They are fighting against their environment, everyone who assumes they are no good, and their own sense of inadequacy. We, as their teachers, fight to help they realize they can do it and hope to get them on the path to success.
My Project
Many of our students struggle with sitting still for extended periods of time. Such restlessness can be a significant distractor from effective learning. By allowing a student to stand and perhaps pace around a bit while working, we can ease or remove such distractors from their ability to learn.
My classroom is already set up in collaborative pods to encourage social emotional growth.
By adding these four desks I can form an additional pod, or move them into place in existing pods to maximize their impact on the classroom. I rarely sit myself, and I can understand my student's own struggles. Giving them this option could make a world of difference.
