My students are miracles. Some of them can't speak, and some of them have sensory issues that confuse their brains into wanting endless physical or aural stimulation. Some of them wear diapers, even though they're teenagers. Some of them have trouble understanding what's food and what's not food. Some of them are obsessed with a specific subject.
All of them are loved.
I'm the music director of an exciting theater program for kids with autism and severe developmental delays. At our school, we help kids who have the biggest challenges in life, find routine, safety, and creative self expression. Our incredible students put on two performances per year. They just need a few more tools than average kids, in order to make that happen.
My Project
Our students are lucky enough to have an engaging theater and music performance program. We're a small school, with limited resources, but you should see what we can create out of a little cardboard and glitter! Some people say our performances are Broadway-worthy! In the upcoming years, we are trying to acquire safe scenery/set pieces, so the students can really move throughout the imaginary world they've created.
We're done making our props out of cardboard; my students deserve real scenery!
This platform with steps will allow our students to build safe "balcony" or other multi-leveled scenes for our performances. We don't want our kids standing on milk crates - it's just not safe! Help our Juliets of the special ed world have a theater experience as it was meant to be! With set pieces like this one, we can make actual scenery the kids can safely interact with.
