This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

All the children from kindergarten through 5th grade at my school come to music class in my classroom. We sing, play Orff instruments (xylophones, metallophones, and glockenspiels) and various percussion instruments including lots of drums. Our students come from a variety of backgrounds, the majority of whom are Hispanic. We also have a variety of socio-economic situations, but most of our students come from economically challenged backgrounds and are on the free lunch program. Lots of our instruments in the music room are extremely old and could use updating. We do some great work together nevertheless.

My Project

We have a nice, basic set of Orff instruments in our classroom, but already some have fallen off of our old stands and cracked. My students move instruments in the classroom to set up for ensemble, but also have to move them from our music room, across the tarmac, into the main building and then onto the stage for performances. It would be so nice to have our heaviest and most expensive instruments arrive safely, ready for our students to use them in performance. Our music budget is minimal, and would never pay for new stands. It's not a very flashy project, but one that is really necessary.
