Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come into the classroom every day, carrying their hardships from home and life, yet they have smiles on their faces and are ready to learn! They are from low-income areas and many of them have jobs and watch their siblings for their hard-working parents. What an inspiration they are!
I have a wonderful rapport with my students and they speak to me about their hardships and challenges in their everyday lives.
It always makes me think, "The least I can do is have a safe space for them to come every day to learn, so that they may educate themselves and follow a path to a better life". My goal is to support them in their endeavors and to make sure that they have what they need to be successful in their education.
Although they may not have all the materials at home to be successful at life, I want to make sure that they have the tools at school to overcome their burdens and move on to be successful in a career/college. They deserve to have the best education possible.
My Project
The students in Ms. E's class need ONE material in order for them to learn efficiently and have the proper information for a debate! The one thing they need is a book. A very specific book about a wonderful woman who unknowingly gave her body to science. The book is "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks".
The students will be able to practice their literacy skills in Biology by reading and discussing this exciting and real-life text!
The students will use the information in the text to come up with their own conclusion about whether or not it was bioethical of the doctor to take Henrietta's cells.
The students will need to put the blame on one party. Was it the fault of the doctor? The family? Society and the media? The hospital? The students will then act out a court case and will be judged by a jury of their peers! The court case encourages students to debate about whose fault it was that Henrietta's cells were taken and have been used for cancer research for years. They will debate about bioethics and discuss what is right and wrong in the medical industry.
