My Students

My students go to school in a fairly small, rural town in North Dakota. They come from many diverse backgrounds, especially diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, and they consistently support one another and learn from one another.

My students are energetic, inquisitive, joyful, and they make my job incredibly enjoyable.

My goal is to help my students achieve success and improve their futures by providing them quality learning experiences. As a school we strive toward that goal each day, and my students do, too.

My Project

Middle school students need to move, and they also enjoy when they have some flexibility and choice in how they work. Through ‘Stand Up for Math Achievement’, we will add two standing desks to pair with the current two standing desks in our classroom.

Our current standing desks are great, and with the high number of students wanting to use them each day it is clear that adding two more will allow more students to experience the benefits of using a standing desk.

It is so popular that we need to have a list for each class period that students use to know whose turn it is to use the standing desk each day. By having the option to stand during all parts of math class more students will be able to improve focus, reduce sedentary behavior, and be able to expend extra energy that comes from too much sitting throughout the day and not getting enough physical activity.

Standing desks also allow students and teachers to be at the same level and encourage a more collaborative environment. This project will assist in the implementation of additional standing desks to improve student engagement and achievement in my 8th grade math classroom. My students need these standing desks to help them be successful, so I am standing up for them.
