Stand Up for Learning

Help me give my students the means to focus on their learning rather than spending all of their energy on the need to sit. These stand up desks provide students the space to actively learn and stay engaged.

My Students

Students in my classroom are some of the most amazing young teens. They need opportunities to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of given materials using a variety of methods. The students I serve all benefit from receiving Special Education services through an IEP (Individualized Education Program). Many find it challenging to sit through a 45 minute class period while remaining focused and able to perform.

These students often demonstrate lower performance on academic tasks because they are so focused on the simple task of remaining seated.

Although their scores might be lower, their capabilities may not be adequately shown.

My Project

Studies have shown done by Angela Hanscom, a pediatric occupational therapist found that "fidgeting" fuels brain activity needed for processing complex thoughts and problems. Without movement, the brain “turns off,” and students are likely to fall asleep. The addition of stand up desks in the classroom will assist students with learning disabilities by giving them the opportunity to "fidget" and focus on the academic tasks and demonstrate their actual levels of understanding.

Additionally a study conducted by Texas A&M University gave school students stand up desks, and found that standing “improved attention, on-task behavior, alertness, and classroom engagement.
