My Students
I am a special education teacher in a small school district just outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Specifically, I provide reading and math support to students, as well as providing behavioral, social/emotional, and adaptive skill support.
My roster includes an extremely diverse group of students in kindergarten, first grade, second grade, and third grade.
Despite the challenges they often face in the school environment, my students are incredibly hard workers. They put so much effort into their learning and love to see the progress they have made!
My Project
I’ve found that many of my students learn best when they utilize items that help them improve their focus, including access to alternative seating options. While remaining seated in a regular chair is appropriate for some students, others may need something very different! Students may need to stand, swing, or move to keep themselves focused and engaged in learning tasks.
Every student is different, so what one student needs may not be what another student needs.
Through the generosity of donors like you, I have already been able to purchase some alternative seating options for my classroom. This project will add one additional option - an adjustable-height desk! An adjustable-height desk gives students the chance to stand up while working rather than sitting down. This can help them become more active learners and can increase their attention/focus during class. A noise-free swinging footrest that is attached to the desk will also give students a chance to redirect excess energy by allowing them to engage in continuous motion with their legs/feet.
Combined with the other seating options that I currently have in my classroom, this adjustable-height desk will accommodate many students' needs!
