Stand up for Kids

My students need choices and I feel allowing them the option to sit or stand will help many of my students stay focused and learn better.

My Students

Before I was a teacher, I had a job where I sat all day. Now, I get to walk around and interact with my students instead of sitting in front of a computer. I want my students to have the opportunity to stand during class. Research shows standing has many health benefits.

Middle school students are a lot of fun to teach!

We do a lot of collaborative projects in my class that require interaction with their peers. Once the students are sitting in their desks, it is sometimes hard to get them to move. If the students are already standing, this will encourage more discussions amongst the groups and more collaboration; which in turn increases higher level thinking. I have read that there are more and more companies that are allowing their employees to work at a stand up desk. I think it is time that schools do the same and provide their students with a choice.

My Project

My students need four stand up desks to give them the opportunity to stand while learning. Standing has several health benefits for the students and can help them focus. I already have two stand up desks that I was able to obtain through Donors Choose and I am hoping to add two more to my classroom. My students love the stand up desks and it will be very helpful to have more.

Having two more stand up desks will not only help me create a space for students to receive instruction in a small group setting but will also provide them with some health benefits.

There is research that shows standing burns more calories, helps students stay better engaged, and helps with neck and back issues. The American Medical Association (AMA) agrees that sitting for extended periods of time can be bad for personal health. Their policy recommends organizations offer sitting alternatives, including standing desks.
