This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Students at my urban high school are motivated to attend the school because of its special focus. Many travel on public transportation from all parts of the city over an hour to attend school. The student body represents the diversity of the city's population.
Students at my school live the FFA motto: "Learning to Do and Doing to Learn." Most of them consider themselves kinesthetic learners.
The students love active learning and are great at working together to help each other learn. It's a joy to watch them discover new concepts together.
My Project
This year, our school changed to a block roster schedule so the students spend much more time in their seats in each class. Since many of them learn best by being active, the extra time in their seats impedes their learning. A standing desk in the classroom will allow students the option to stand during the class.
Allowing students to choose their classroom position (seated or standing) will enable them to improve their capacity for learning.
The standing desk can also function as a discussion center for small group work as well. This desk will be a great addition to my STEM classroom.
