Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I enjoy being part of the reading intervention team at our school. I get to help monitor and set plans for SRI growth for all of our students in each grade level. Beside that, I also get to help plan the celebrations for SRI growth on a classroom and site level. In my class I reward student's growth from 10 (free time) points and higher up to 100 (snack and free time) points or more because if I don’t students would be left out and maybe feel like their growth does not count. In order to be part of the school wide SRI celebration students must be the top ten list for most growth (gets a cookie) and or the list for on or above grade level (gets an ice cream) which is less than 10% of our students at our school and rarely any of my new comer and EL students.
I have seen them grow in that short amount of time and I am glad to see the progress that they are making in reading intervention.
Overall, I think that these positive interactions help set the expectation for new students and help build a foundation for a great learning environment.
My Project
Students in reading intervention sometimes struggle with reading stamina. At times this is due to them feeling like there are not enough copies of books of interest to read and or because they simple can not access the English language as well as some of their peers because their home language is Spanish.
Having these books in their class library in their native language Spanish and books they have asked for like “El Capitan Calzoncillos (Captain Underpants), Nate el grande (Big Nate), and Diario de Greg (Diary of a Wimpy Kid) will create a stampede to read during independent reading time.
