My Project
This year, our humanities students are exploring the essential question "Who built the United States of America?" As we attempt to answer that question, it is essential that students understand how racist ideas have shaped our country from its founding to the present, how people have fought to change them, and how understanding this can allow us to move toward greater equality.
The new graphic novel version of Ibram X Kendi's Stamped from the Beginning provides a perfect reference for students to understand these complex ideas.
Students will be able to continually refer back to this text to understand both the nuances of how racism has been built into the fabric of the U.S. and key figures and moments in the resistance against it. As we dive into all of the complexities of this history, the Stamped graphic novel will allow students to continue to refer back to key ideas and deepen their understanding.
We know that Stamped from the Beginning: A Graphic History of Racist Ideas in America will be an impactful text that will stick with our students long after this unit ends. In its graphic novel form, this text becomes increasingly accessible to all of our students, including English learners and students with disabilities.
We have had a lot of success in pairing graphic novels with grade level texts in our classes--with so many comic and Manga fans at our school, these texts are particularly effective in keeping our students engaged in and excited about reading. This project will provide graphic novel class sets for 3 classrooms, reaching approximately 200 students total. We appreciate your support in helping our students access this important work of history and advocacy!
