My Students

We compose in Music class! Because I am not a homeroom, I must procure writing materials on my own.

We are from all over the world.

Our population is largely Latino, with less than 40% Caucasian. We are an ELL center, which means that many of our kids come to us with little or no English. Music is one place where language isn't always necessary for understanding and accomplishment.

My Project

The students at our school actively write routinely in Music classes. Not only do we write using rhythms, rhymes and form, but we also utilize staff paper in order to use pitch in treble (and sometimes in bass) clefs. The students will benefit from the toner in that I am able to customize the staff paper using a particular program, which makes composition much more accessible. The staff paper can be customized quickly to fit any key signature, time signature, format and set of phrases. Additionally, having pencils ready to be used is really vital when I have no minutes in between classes to sharpen more!

Our students need multiple experiences daily with writing, for many different purposes.

One of the ways I am able to support them is through composition. Music writing is a great, purposeful connection in strengthening their writing skills!
