My Students
My students are embracing the workshop model this year! It is WONDERFUL for their learning minds but oh so hard on their backs! As a classroom family we spend a lot of time on the community carpet and I wouldn't want it any other way...almost! We need support...back support!
I'm sure all teachers feel this way about their class but I truly feel as though I couldn't ask for a better group of students for my first year of teaching regular education.
They are caring, principled, honest, reflective and open-minded students.
I started the year out with describing our group as a class family. I did this to get the students to start thinking about themselves as a unit and how to function as a large unit with individual differences. Little did I know how much they would grow into that term "class family" in just a couple of short, fast months! Class family, class family member, respect, honesty and dignity are all terms that simply roll off all of our tongues daily.
Our community circles and meeting times are a huge reason to this solid sense of community. We sit and discuss and grow together side by side. Being able to sit around in a circle and be able to see each others faces multiple times a day is priceless in my teacher's book!
My Project
My class family will use these stadium chairs as an alternative to the more expensive "back jack" chairs. One student who required the extra support has one of these chairs. I saw the look on each of my class family member's faces as they looked at this supportive tool longingly. I was there among them! I don't want to sit in a chair when they don't get to! I'm certainly not as young and spry as these young 4th graders either. However, I understood where they were coming from when they said such things as, "I get fidgety when I've been sitting on the floor for too long," or "my legs hurt" or they would simply end up lying down or leaning over (not in a good posture way either!). My students and I deserve to be comfortable when we are making such great strides as learners!
Donations to this project will improve my students morale when it is time to head to the community meeting area.
They will not dread the length of a discussion because their back is hurting them. These chairs will improve my students' ability to focus on the lesson or topic at hand, instead of how uncomfortable they are.
