My 27 energetic and loving 1st, 2nd, and 3rd-grade scholars work independently to complete a monthly or weekly work chart at their own pace. While the Montessori materials lend themselves to mastery, feeling safe and comfortable is a major challenge in our urban public school to help each scholar meet their potential.
Despite their learning disabilities and different levels of understanding, they come in ready to learn every day with huge smiles on their faces.
They all have great ideas and really want to make their teachers and parents proud. Our school is a unique public, Montessori, magnet school in a large, high needs, urban school district. My school is dedicated to providing a safe, stimulating, and peaceful environment for our scholars. We are a Title I school in which all of our scholars receive free or reduced-price lunches. Our school welcomes partnerships in the community, which provide necessary services to our scholars; however, our scholars still have large gaps to overcome.
My Project
Teaching organization at an early age is essential to building life long learning skills. While having these totes and clear totes will alleviate extra HOURS and possibly DAYS of Montessori classroom setup time for our short 6 week summer. It will also help give clear distinctions of where to put their personal belongings during the school year and how to find our larger impressionable Montessori materials that can't sit out on our shelves all year long due to space. Having a specific space not only gives the scholars a way to fit in but it also builds a sense of responsibility, organization, and ownership. Life skills that MUST be learned at an early age!
