My Project
My students are so excited to host Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Festival in May! This will be our first ever AAPI Festival! Due to COVID complications the past two years, we had plans but could not execute our plans. However, my awesome K-Pop Club and Anime Club students have taken the initiative to plan most of the event - finding time between schoolwork, fine arts performances, and senior portfolio practices - and now they require some items to bring their idea to fruition. These items will allow my students to host the Asian & Pacific Islander Heritage Festival and perform traditional dances from various cultures this year and for years to come.
Though some of the items are consumables, many of them are reusable and used to showcase the rich and varied traditions from different cultural groups in Asia and the Pacific Islands.
At our school, we have students and some teachers with ethnicities including India, Vietnam, Japan, Korea, Guam, Pakistan, Indonesia, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Singapore, and Cambodia. The items we are striving to obtain are for decoration and performances like the calming ancient art of fan dances to the more high energy Bhangra and Garba dances seen in Bollywood films.
We are a small school but have big plans to include as many AAPI countries and cultures as possible in our festival. This might mean some are simply digital posters this year, but we plan to increase the size of this small festival each year as we create items and get both our school community and the surrounding community involved! This is our first step - getting off the ground and out of our seats!
