Squishy, Bendy, Rubber Craft Figures From the Archive of School Molds

My Project

The first Donorschoose project of the year introduced students to mold filling with Elmer's toy fabrication kits. We made it to the second half of the school year and some students said that was their favorite project so far.

We have years of silicone molds already from previous projects but nothing to fill them with.

Mold release spray makes it so you can use silicone to make figures inside of silicone molds. We can only use platinum molds for platinum silicone but that's no worries. Platinum molds are far better suited for student handling cause they don't tear or break as fast as tin silicone does. Students will each get measuring cups and a small portion of silicone to mix on their own with gloves, with precautions. I will bring in my vacuum motorized degasser pot. We will compare the bubbles of degassed and non degassed molds. I will show them how the silicone inflates to 3 times its size before purging out all the bubbles. and the students will learn about negative pressure first hand. There are so many things I didn't learn growing up and kids these days deserve to get access to things I had to find out for myself before they are out in the field. There are plenty of wheels invented already: I'll help students find some that fit their art vehicle with this project.
