This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are so musically gifted, I struggle to keep up. From Kindergarten through 8th grade, they are full of songs, questions, and energy. It seems like each of them is bursting with desire to be the teacher! They love movement, songs, and instruments.
When given the proper tools and support, our students will become the best musicians and scholars in Newark.
Our school is the Performing Arts school in the South Ward of Newark, New Jersey. While the South Ward faces some of the most significant economic challenges in the city of Newark, our students #RiseUp to learn every day. Indeed, in previous years, the classroom has faced instability which has affected our current musical resources and curriculum. For every problem there is a solution and together our students and staff will achieve greatness.
My Project
Belmont Runyon Community School was chosen to be the South Ward recipient of the VH1 Save the Music Grant. We received dozens of violins, violas, and cellos. Added to the existing inventory of guitars and percussion instruments, this makes for a great Orchestral and General Music classroom!
While we may not have a huge budget, with your help, our students will have enormous success.
We are lucky to have many instruments, but we do not have replacement strings, drum sticks, guitar picks, and other necessary basic equipment. On their road to success my students will break strings, lose guitar picks, and everything else that professional musicians also do. Although it may seem like we are asking for a large amount of money, this equipment is what every school orchestra and general music program needs to have to flourish!
