This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is a safe place for the children to learn and have fun. We read books, play on the playground, explore math and science, go to the library, and participate in music and movement activities. We also do some pretty serious work with the speech pathologist and occupational therapist.
My students are 3-5-years old, and all of them have special needs.
They are full of energy, and love to dance and sing! They are also very brave, though they don't know it. They have to work very hard to make progress, and they do!
Our school is very supportive of all the different things we do with the children like having members of the community come to visit, participating in art contests, training for Young Athletes including Special Olympics, and taking field trips when we can.
My Project
Picture 100, 3 to 5-year old children on stage, all wearing cowboy hats and colorful bandanas, dancing an American folk dance or modified square dance, in front of their parents, family, and community. Yee haw!
The materials I am requesting through the Disney CREATE Grant, will be worn by the 3 to 5-year old students from 10 different special day classes, from throughout the district. They will be performing in the district's International Festival of the Arts in May.
Square dancing is a dance of directions: circle to the right, circle to the left, everybody in, everybody out, etc. The children will learn the different directional components of the dance, and on the evening of the festival, they will be able to perform the dance.
This is a great opportunity for the young children with special needs in our district to participate with the rest of the general education population.
This project, funded by Disney, might not change our students' lives, as much as it might change the lives of all the people, their parents and the greater Anaheim community, who will be at the festival that evening.
This is also a wonderful opportunity for us as teachers to support the visual and preforming arts in a very large and public event.
