Learning in our own way is one of the strategies we use to provide flexibility in our classroom. My co-teacher and I would like to provide the tools needed for students to succeed by providing an environment for students to learn to the best of their ability. My co-teacher and I would like to provide a safe, comfortable and homey environment that makes learning welcoming each and every day.
My fifth graders come from a diverse school community of about 600 students.
Together, we are all part of the largest elementary school in our district. These amazing fifth graders continue to inspire me with their desire to learn, and it is my job to find a way to make it.
My Project
Nintendo Switch has created the perfect system for elementary schools in their Nintendo Labo program. This program allows students to explore engineering, physics, and programming to create their own toy which can then interface with the Nintendo Switch program. I want my students to experience programming and game engineering so that they will be better prepared for life after school. Many of my kids are hands on and I am always looking for ways to integrate fun to math, science, and technology.
The materials requested in my project will give my students the chance to explore within the fields of game design and programming, hands on building and design, which will help with exploring future careers such as Mechanical, Civil Engineers as well as Computer Programmers.
They will be able to build a variety of structures and in the process, learn how each structure works. Then, once the structure is built, students can explore their STEM skills by experimenting with their creations and finding how they interact with the computer software. My goal for this transformation is for my kids to pretend and become spies, and solve STEM activities in each room to move on to the next. STEM activities would include working with knex, knex kits, coding, coding a drone, and the final mystery would be to discover the Nintendo Switch and build a given activity. Introducing all my kiddos, will help them to discover careers that are endless. There are no limits, no wrong way to do it; just unhindered exploration.
