My Students
"Eat your vegetables" is one of the most feared phrases to a child. However, my students are shedding new light on the awesomeness that is fresh produce.
Our school educates the students of one of the poorest counties in Texas.
73% of my students live in poverty yet, they have not allowed that to dampen their enthusiasm for science. Our school is in a rural community with an average of 85 students in each grade. The kids may have different backgrounds, but their love for being outside is a unifying factor.
My Project
This fall, we started a small school garden to finish our unit about plants and composting. My students interest in the garden grew faster than weeds. By being able to expand our school garden, my students will be exposed to a wider variety of vegetables and encouraged to have a healthier diet. The garden will also allow us to conduct real world experiments and investigations such as soil analysis and garden practices. By having an outdoor learning area, science will come alive for my students increasing their comprehension and application of science concepts.
I firmly believe science in not something you can just read about, it is something you must do.
We would like to see our garden help provide fresh produce for school lunches and our local food bank. By showing how easy gardening is through our blog and community presentations, we hope to inspire others to garden. Research has proven garden projects increase science achievement and I hope to see that in my students. I also hope to instill a life long desire to keep learning with our garden.
