Help me give my students a new coding tool, the Sphero SPRK+. The Sphero SPRK+ teaches robotics and programming. Spheros
inspire curiosity, creativity, and invention through connected play and coding.
I compare my first-grade classroom to a one-room schoolhouse. One classroom, with a diverse population of learners.
I have 23 diverse learners, all working on different levels, skills, and paces between reading, writing, math, spelling, science, social studies, technology, and basic child development.
I encourage all my students to work at their individual levels. They all have specific skills to build upon, whether it be high-level reading or writing, or basic fine motor skills. I engage them with hands-on learning and differentiated choice. They have many opportunities to build upon their strengths. I provide time for communication both orally and written. I also provide time for play, where the students are able to develop social and problem-solving skills among themselves. I am very structured within our daily routines and schedule, but within these parameters, they are given opportunities for choice, creative expression, communication, and collaboration.
My Project
I am requesting a 12 pack of Sphero SPRK+ robots for my first grade students. Sphero SPRK+ allows students to learn programming through hands-on activities in a curious, creative, and collaborative learning environment.
My first graders are quickly becoming mini engineers!
They began the year learning to code using color-codes with markers, and now they are learning to write algorithms on a computer.
As they gradually move up the coding continuum, they are ready to take their new found knowledge of coding on the computer, and apply it to physical robotics. They will create algorithms to program the Sphero SPRK+ and watch it go! They will collaborate to problem solve as they learn from trial and error through coding!
