My Students
Do you remember the first time you were grasped by Shakespeare? My students have not yet been exposed to the beauty that is the Bard and as 8th graders, I would love to immerse them in the bloody depths of Macbeth.
My students are thirsty for a challenge and very into graphic novels.
This class set of Macbeth will whet their appetite for Shakespeare and the texts are differentiated so that all levels of readers will be able to grasp the content . They are in a low income neighborhood on the south side of Chicago.
My Project
I am currently struggling with exposing my students to the arts. They crave drama and art - our school currently does not offer these programs. With these novels, we will be able to bring drama into our classrooms and expose my kids to this classic text. I think it is a shame they have not read any Shakespeare in Middle School. Most of the books offered are not the challenges that I feel my students need to place them in a competitive college environment and stay there. Help me to push my children to the next level and open their eyes to the beauty of William Shakespeare.
Education is a right that everyone gets.
Quality of education depends on the area you live in. When I was in school, it was not fair that because I grew up in an upper middle class environment that I was exposed to classic texts and my students are not. Many teachers feel like culturally relevant and pop culture books are important to engage minorities in the classroom. As a minority teacher, I beg to differ. My kids need to be challenged regardless of the neighborhood our classroom is in.
