My students need supplies to enhance social emotional personalized skills. They will be building a green wall, learning cooking skills, as well as exercising and learning how it feels to cope with stress productively.
I have worked in Chicago with high risk students coming from 70 different countries and neighborhoods all over Chicago.
Their background and everyday challenges give them a unique set of personal struggles to make it to school, clothed, fed and focused. It takes a toll on their learning and growth in tremendous ways. As most Chicago inner city schools, we are underfunded and lack resources to teach our children correct means to deal with their feelings, past traumatic occurrences and stressful energy they have to deal with on their own. While all else going on in their teenage brains and bodies.
My students love being active, however, majority don't have the resources or techniques to stay calm and focused and ready for learning. Using breathing, meditation, stretching and yoga is proven to help with focus and coping with negative feelings.
My Project
Exercise gives children the opportunity to develop physical competence through practicing self control using TRX and Exercise bands,
understand and make sense of their world, interact with others,
express and control emotions, develop their symbolic and
problem-solving abilities, and practice life skills necessary for their future and. Exercise bands, cooking supplies, natural light, painting materials will give my students the opportunity to learn and experience experiential skills, calm their brains and bodies, and produce strategies to give them optimum growth.
Learning to cook, clean, exercise and cope with stress through healthy mechanisms will enhance the chance to grow emotionally, academically, and physically.
