My Project

In the heart of our Title I school, where high expectations meet the realities of food insecurity, my students are striving for academic success. Like many schools, the pandemic has amplified the challenges they face, with many students experiencing hunger and stress that directly impact their ability to learn.

As their English teacher, I witness firsthand the daily struggles that go beyond academics.

Many arrive in my classroom without having had a proper meal, making it difficult to focus and engage. To bridge this gap, I've been providing snacks out of my own pocket, and the impact has been remarkable.

These snacks aren't just food; they're a lifeline. They:

Fuel Learning: A simple snack helps students overcome hunger, allowing them to concentrate and actively participate in lessons.

Foster Connection: Sharing a snack creates a welcoming environment, encouraging students to open up and build trust. This opens the door for vital social-emotional learning (SEL) conversations, allowing me to provide support and guidance.

Promote Positive Interactions: The snacks encourage students to stop by my classroom throughout the day, providing opportunities for informal check-ins. These moments allow me to offer encouragement, academic support, and a listening ear, helping them navigate challenges and build resilience.

Reinforce Belief in their Potential: Even though we are a Title 1 school, we hold all of our students to high standards. Providing them with basic needs being met, shows them that we believe in their ability to succeed.
