Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Our high school is located in East LA in the middle of the low-income community, Lincoln Heights. The school's population consists of students of color, the majority coming from Latino, Asian, and Black backgrounds. Many schools located in low-income communities and communities of color often have less funding than schools at more privileged locations. Due to low funds, students do not have many resources to help them succeed in the classroom, which can lower the students' academic self-esteem.
Math, specifically, could use more funding in order to provide students with more resources that can help benefit and expand their knowledge.
Math is a subject that most students struggle with. It has one of the highest failure rates but the education system still moves them to the next level without the proper foundation. This causes a lack of motivation in the students. I hope that by providing my students with small incentives, such as school supplies and other small prizes, can keep them motivated. I want a way to show them that I see their hard work and that I appreciate their efforts. Despite the setbacks my students have come across, they still show up to class and put in great effort to pass. I want to show them that their hard work doesn’t go unnoticed.
