I teach at Washington Irving Elementary, which is part of the Chicago Public Schools. We serve over 86% low-income families. As a first and second grade teacher at Irving Elementary, I have been able to provide exciting science experiences for my students, thanks to the generosity of donors like you. With your help, I'd like to help my students experience the wonderful world of spring! Spring is the time of year where everything comes back to life after the long winter slumber. It's the perfect time for studying the animal kingdom, and closely studying mammals, amphibians, birds, reptiles, and fish. Spring is the perfect time for watching nature unfold right in front of our eyes. I would like the first and second grade students to have experiences with plants, butterflies, and tadpoles. I would like them to learn about the life cycles of plants, insects, and small animals through first-hand experiences in the classroom. The materials I am requesting include a complete Delta Classroom Plant kits: which include soil, seeds, pots, and all other necessary materials. I am also requesting an Incubator Kit for hatching chicks, a Live Frog Habitat Kit, a Butterfly Garden Kit and a felt set which illustrates the life cycle of butterflies, and other materials to help support these projects. These materials, coupled with science books we already have, students will learn to become responsible caretakers for their small living things, while collecting data through direct observations and journaling about their predictions, the processes, and their experiences as a whole.. I have watched my past students become inquisitive and enthusiastic about science and excited about coming to school just so they can see what changes have occurred. I have observed the growth of their abilities to work cooperatively in small groups and partners while working to understand the scientific process. Their enthusiasm is so contagious that they begin to share their knowledge with others at school and at home. They simply do not want to miss anything! The cost of life science teaching aids is $1,330.00. Thank you for your consideration and the wonderful experiences that your generous donations have allowed my students for the past five years. I am looking forward to continuing this tradition of our month long exploration of all that is spring with my new students! Thank you again!
