This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a class of seven students with severe and profound mental and physical disabilities. The students range in age from six to nine. All of the students are nonverbal, five are in wheelchairs, and three have low vision. Other disabilities they have include epilepsy, cerebral palsy, Dandy Walker Syndrome, Down Syndrome, and developmental delays.
This is a new classroom, just opened this year. We have been working all year to get the supplies needed to maximize student learning in the classroom. Unfortunately, we have not been able to get the "extra" supplies and equipment to enhance the learning process. With spring here and the weather nice, we would love to be able to go outside and learn at the same time.
We have lots of switches in our classroom and, of course, we have regular bubbles, but the students do not have the ability to blow them. With an adaptive bubble blower, the students will be able to experience the simple pleasure of blowing bubbles. They will also have a variety of new sensory balls to play with outside.
With this bubble blower and adaptive sensory balls, the students in my class can experience simple, yet fun outdoor play activities that are age appropriate and motivating to them. This will provide endless reinforcement for the students. The smiles on their faces when they can independently complete tasks such as blowing bubbles are priceless.
