This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students attend Jack E. Singley Academy in Irving, Texas, one of the most diverse cities in America. Even though most of my students are second-generation immigrants and approximately 70% of them qualify for free or reduced-price meals, they have challenged themselves by enrolling in AP Physics 1! My students are creative, curious and love learning.

However, even though they study and work hard, they tend to struggle on the new AP Physics 1 exam due the exam's rigor and emphasis on inquiry-based investigations.

My Project

The items requested will help my students develop a deeper understanding of motion and energy transformations in items that they have previously used in their everyday life, but have never thought about in terms of physics! Everyone has played with a yoyo, but not many people stop to think about how the motion an unrolling yoyo can be studied in terms of vertical and rotational motion, or compared to the motion of a free falling object like an apple falling out of an apple tree! Everyone has pulled on a spring-loaded lanyard (or a meter tape) and then let it quickly snap back, but few people think about how energy is stored in the spring when pulled out and what happens to that energy when released! Simply by using yoyos and spring-loaded lanyards during collaborative group activities, my students will be able to extend their understanding of major concepts associated with physics in a way that is truly relatable to their everyday life!
