Spring Fling: Surrounded by Nature and Art in the Library
Help me give my students access to natural elements, like plants and butterflies, art supplies for relaxing coloring or crafting, and a calm and beautiful cozy environment in the library.

My Project
No matter how great of a student, every child needs a moment of respite. School pressures, family, friends. All adolescents balance many concerns and their brains are still developing into full humans. Some students are not as fortunate to have a quiet and calm space at home. The library at BHSEC Queens is an alternative space where some students (and even adults in our community) come to study quietly, tucking into a corner carrel. Some also come to get away from the many pressures "out there." Reading in a cozy nook is a small luxury. Nature is calming, as is the focus required to work on an art or craft project
Students need the calm that the library provides.
They like to add to the community puzzle, browse the stacks, cozy up on the couches with a book, or just stare out the window. The items requested in this project are meant to encourage students to be closer to nature, to engage in art activities and to read for pleasure. We encourage these activities because we know that a calming and inviting library benefits students in both their social emotion and academic spheres. My students of every age, come into the library to browse the stickers for their water bottles, check to see if the butterflies have hatched, to sit and close their eyes for a minute or to create a fun poster for the club they are starting. Thank you for helping to make this an ongoing experience for my students.
