This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

First graders learn by doing, touching, and experimenting with the materials around them. This spring our science units will include the butterfly life cycle, the properties of matter (and slime) and the parts of a plant. In math we will be reviewing money and using ten frames to add and subtract.

These hands-on materials will help further their curiosity as the first graders learn about the world around them.

Our butterfly kits are one of the most anticipated units in first grade: we watch the caterpillars make their cocoons, then see them emerge as butterflies drying their wings, and then release them into our school garden. We also look forward to planting seeds and recording our observations as they grow. Other materials in this project will support experiential learning in math: adding and subtracting, identifying coins and working out problems on our whiteboards. Finally, the first graders will celebrate all their hard work this year by making slime together.
