Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
As students are learning about their own body systems, they will have the unique opportunity to observe another organism—chickens—as they develop these same systems.
Through the egg incubation and hatching process, students will witness how complex systems like the circulatory, respiratory, and muscular systems form and function in a living animal.
Once hatched, the chicks will stay in the classroom, where students will observe their growth and behavior over time. By making direct comparisons between human and chicken anatomy, students will deepen their understanding of how body systems work across species.
Caring for the chicks is also a key part of the learning experience. Students will learn responsibility and empathy as they help maintain a healthy environment for the chicks—changing bedding, ensuring they have clean water, and providing proper nutrition.
To support this hands-on project, we are seeking a brooder box to keep the chicks warm, medicated chick feed to promote healthy development, enrichment toys to encourage natural behaviors, a water and food feeder for daily care, and a hutch where the chicks can safely grow. These resources will allow students to observe body systems in action, draw meaningful connections to their own biology, and truly bring the life science curriculum to life.
