WANTED: Sunshine Bags with materials and resources that allow parents to assist their children with mathematical concepts while sitting around the kitchen table, hanging out on the couch, or playing in the backyard.
My fourth grade students attend a public K-5 school in Texas.
They come from a wide range of mathematical backgrounds: some are fluent with their multiplication facts while others still struggle with basic addition. Since nearly half of my students come from low income homes, this project will provide resources to extend their math learning while not at school.
My Project
With the materials requested, Sunshine Bags will be created so my students will be able to continue their math learning at home and have resources available to teach their families about what we are learning in the classroom. Each Sunshine Bag will focus around a different math concept: place value, addition & subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, area & perimeter, geometric shapes, time, and problem solving. Within each Sunshine Bag, families will find a book to read, directions and materials for a variety of activities, and a composition book to record their learning and any possible questions they still have about the math concept. As students take home different Sunshine Bags, they will be able to see which activities their classmates' families did and what they learned.
Often times parents want to help their children with math concepts but do not have either the resources nor the knowledge to do so.
With Sunshine Bags parents will be able to see first-hand what their children are learning and then have a clearer understanding of how to help their children be successful in school. Thank you in advance for your generosity!
