I teach in a tight-knit, rural community in southern Georgia. Many of our students live in generational poverty. This number is so high that 88% of our student body qualifies for free and reduced lunch. In fact, many of them will be the first in their family to graduate high school or go to college. As teachers we know that education is the key to helping them rise above comfortable norms to reach their full potential.
Teaching all of our reading, language, and writing standards through engaging, thought-provoking novels not only teaches students the curriculum, but gives them enduring understanding and (hopefully) makes them lifelong learners.
One of the ways that I like to engage students in the reading process is through non traditional seating. Space is our classroom is limited, but rugs are easy to store and will give them a more comfortable place to read than the floor, and will help them spread out when it's time for partner reading.
My Project
I love to give our students opportunities for social interaction while they learn. My students have always loved sitting pretty much anywhere but in a chair - especially when they can sit on the floor. These rugs will help them sit on the floor during project work a little more cleanly and comfortably. I like this particular selection because I can take them home and wash them periodically.
In addition, I have a great game that allows them to demonstrate their proficiency with vocabulary in a myriad of different ways, but we need for them to be able to roll dice to make the choice.
