Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In our low-income/high-poverty school district, the students in my class are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. They live in a city that is infamous for drugs and other crimes and is often on the news. Many people automatically attach a stigma and prejudice when they hear the city name because too many times the successes of the residents do not get the recognition they deserve. To combat the many challenges they face, I am looking to provide my students with opportunities to engage in creative and meaningful learning experiences.
I have had the same students in my self-contained autism class for two to three years and now they are moving on to the fourth grade with a new teacher.
This year, I will be teaching students with autism in kindergarten and first grade. Many of these students have returned to in-person for the first time since March of 2020 when Covid19 shut down schools across the nation.
My Project
I usually only post projects for my classroom but due to circumstances, I am creating one this time for more than just my own students. My school has students from preschool through 8th grade. With the holidays approaching, I want to help spread some holiday cheer. My students with autism join another first grade class every day for specials such as art, gym, music, and computers. I wanted to help with obtaining items for not only my students but their peers as well.
Covid has caused more of a burden to many of our families.
This past year and a half have been difficult as many of our students had to deal with a lot as they spent a year and a half, learning through Zoom, away from their friends and teachers. I created this project in hopes to help get dolls, games, and toys for them to bring home and enjoy during our holiday break.
