My students need books to expand their social emotional learning and empathy towards others. There can never be too much kindness in the world and these resources will help cultivate that!
My students are fantastic! They are always willing to listen and learn about the topics I present- whether it be making good choices or how to be a good friend. They love when I bring stories into their classroom and are always bummed when I don't have a book to read them. Many of them come in to my office and ask if they can have lunch in here to re-read a story we have read.
I spend a lot of time finding the right books to read to students and then many times have to order an individual book, or track one down at a library.
If I had the books in my office, I could easily access them and teach the lessons I want to teach.
My Project
This year, I would like to focus on teaching all my students how to be more mindful. I want them to understand how their emotions affect their mood. I want them to understand how their emotions affect those around them. I want them to understand what their body is telling them and teach them coping skills to deal with strong emotions. When I bring books into the classroom, it leads to such rich conversation and the students look forward to what book I've found to read to them that week. I want to teach them to have empathy for others so we can all be kinder to one another. I plan to spend time this summer getting to know the requested books such as "All Are Welcome" and "Be Kind" and setting up a schedule of when I will read each one. I will also get activities ready for each book."The Growth Mindset Coach" will be the first book I dive into to see how best to teach my students how to have a growth mindset and practice more empathy. There's always room for more kindness in the world!
