I teach fifth grade at a K-8 elementary school in the Sierra Nevada foothills. My students are growing up together in a small, tight-knit community school. I have diverse learning needs throughout my classroom but all of my students are eager, enthusiastic and innovative despite our low socioeconomic and Title I status. They are enjoying collaborative, hands-on projects and working together to accomplish a goal.
This is my first year teaching fifth grade.
I'm excited to have students participate in their growth and education throughout the year.
My Project
My students love creating, especially for others. That is why this holiday season, they will be making candles as holiday gifts for their families.
It is very rewarding to give to others during the holidays.
My students need a hot plate, wax, wicks, tins and oils to create these gifts. This is a great opportunity to teach my students about how to think about others and to give to people that love them unconditionally.
The students will be part of the candle making process from beginning to end. The hot plates will be used to melt the wax, the wicks will be placed in the tins with the glue gun and the oils will be used to create a holiday scent.
I am also requesting cocoa, chocolate chips and marshmallows for our holiday party before our school break.
