Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a special education teacher who teaches in one of the most impoverished cities in the state. Currently I service 25 students who come from low socioeconomic backgrounds where 96% of the population receives free lunch. 92% of students in the district are Hispanic, 71% of the students first language is not English and 31% speak English as a second language.
My classroom is made up of a variety of learners who all learn in different ways.
Even though they may encounter many struggles within their daily lives, they still come to school excited to learn each day. It is crucial to provide a safe learning environment for my students, where all students feel comfortable. I want my students to know that I am proud of how far they have come since the beginning of the year and look forward to making them feel even more proud of themselves, as well as safe in my classroom!
My Project
Movement is essential to productive learning in my classroom. No child can sit still all day long and learn. In my class my students move from desks to small group work tables to technology stations and of course the rug.
Whether it is a whole group focus lesson in math or literacy, small group work or independent reading, the rug is a crucial part of my classroom.
It is as important as any other tool that I use to teach. All students learn differently and some need to "spread out" to be productive. The rug is the perfect place for such learning. A new rug will give my students a place to do some of their best work.
A new rug will not only give my students an important medium for learning it will also enhance the environment in my room.
Having a clean and comfortable place to learn is essential for all students. A bright and positive learning area truly helps students feel motivated and willing to work hard. Not all students learn the same way and for some of my special education students moving around the room and spreading out to work and be productive is crucial for their success.
