Sports & Recreation for Special Needs Classroom

My students need active sitting stools, bouncy bands, giant outdoor versions of Jenga, checkers, and tic-tac-toe, corn hole game, volleyball set, kick balls, kick ball bases, & a wheel chair ramp for playing kick ball.

My Students

I teach in a special needs classroom for students with moderate to severe disabilities. My goal is to teach my students to function as independently as they each possibly can. I want my students to be able to understand how to care for themselves and do simple tasks like use their own money.

We try to work daily on their independent skills and also expose them to grade level content and experiences with their peers.

My students work on various skills that include: socialization, communication, turn taking, colors, numbers, toileting, dressing/undressing, and simply writing their name or address. We also focus on grade level skills to the best of our ability and get exposed to concepts like main idea, allusions, analogies, figurative language, functions, linear equations, volume, and surface area. Every day is a very unique experience.

My Project

This project is 100% kid-inspired. My students have multiple needs and various ability levels. My students all struggle cognitively but some struggle to participate in activities due to their physical disabilities. My students wanted sporting equipment and outdoor games that they could play with no matter their abilities. For example, one student who has physical impairments does not participate when his classmates or peers are playing games like kickball at break. The wheelchair ramp in this project will allow him to participate by rolling the ball down the ramp rather than kicking since he is unable to do that. My students will also be able to move around and play a giant version of a game like Jenga, play a large version of tic-tac-toe together, or checkers. Each of these games will require my students to physically move around the game board or area to move their pieces.

My students will use the materials in this project to become more active and learn how to participate in recreational and sporting activities.

Many of my students lack the skills needed to even know how to do something for leisure or recreation. We are going to use the products in this project to learn new ways to be active. After we acquire new skills, we are going to utilize them at break with our peers and work on improving the amount of time we are active daily. Also, to help work toward and maintain 60 minutes of physical activity daily, my students (whom are able) will utilize the active stools or bouncy bands to burn some energy and "move" while they are sitting in the classroom working.
