This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are interested in Sports Medicine but have little exposure to the various related careers. Our podcast allows them to connect with about twenty Sports Medicine professionals each year. As the class grows, so does our need for equipment to ensure that all students are equally engaged.

In Texas there is a great diversity of languages and cultures.

Families of low-economic status dominate our high school’s population. Like most youth, our students are rarely without some form of media such as music, videos, or social networking. Also, they are generally more knowledgeable of technology than most adults. We are working with dedicated students who are constantly battling distractions and language barriers. I have incorporated regular visits to our campus's "College Room" where my students are encouraged to prepare for the future. In the College Room we research careers, majors, universities, scholarship applications, and college applications. Most of my students will be the first in their family to attend and graduate from college. It is difficult for parents to prepare a student for college if they have no experience themselves. We are dedicated to helping not only our Sports Medicine students, but all students move toward pursuing higher education. school

My Project

Our Sports Medicine podcast has connected our students with classrooms across Texas and Arkansas, as well as various doctors, a sports psychologist, a physical therapist, a registered dietitian, and many other professionals. This adds up to nearly forty guest speakers. As our Sports Medicine class size grows we must also grow our resources so that no student is without an active part in each show. Nearly all of the equipment we use has been purchased through grant funding. When we use Skype our students must use headphones to hear and interact with our guests. This requires another headphone amplifier and more headphones. We are also requesting a boom microphone stand with microphone to place the stand further away from the students to reduce accidental bumps and improve the quality of the recordings. We are currently posting our Sports Medicine podcasts on iTunes, YouTube, Ustream, and other popular websites.

Our students need exposure to professionals, schools, and careers outside of their community.

Our podcast seeks to connect students with an otherwise unknown world. Physical Education in public schools is rapidly dwindling; therefore, funding for PE elective credit is non-existent. We are diligently seeking to increase the number of students and the quality of education in our high school Sports Medicine program. We are changing education with your help.
