This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students need to learn collaboratively, not only in the classroom, but also during structured recess. The equipment will allow my students to play with their peers and to release energy positively.

My students are simply awesome!

I have a group of 22 amazing 5th graders at an urban school. Most of my students are considered English Language Learners and receive free/reduced lunch. We are in a Title 1 school and extremely under funded. They love to play and learn positive ways to interact with their peers.

My Project

My students have structured recess in the morning and in the afternoon. We currently either have no equipment or the ones available are very worn out. "Play" is an important part of learning how to relate to peers and build confidence. Unfortunately, we don't have those opportunities because there is a lack of equipment at our school. I envision the boys setting cones to mark the blacktop to play soccer or kickball. I see the girls playing with different jump ropes and singing songs with their friends. I see collaborative play, laughter, and discussions. Research shows that social emotional learning has to occur outside of the classroom in order for students to make connections between classroom and real world.

This project will improve my classroom because my students will have a positive outlet for energy release.

It will also allow for learning to take place outside the classroom. It will change my students' lives for the better because they will utilize various academic and social skills in a non-classroom setting.
