My Project
One of my favorite parts of teaching English to high school students is connecting with them through discussions about books!
Some of my students absolutely love books; they come to me looking for a specific book, or come to me recommending that I read a specific book.
Others are reluctant readers who haven't read a book in its entirety in years. I love talking to both types of students. For the students who are excited about reading, I love connecting with them through these mutual book recommendations. For the others, I love sharing that moment with them when they've finally found a book they've enjoyed. This semester, I have a lot of students who are interested in sports, so I'm trying to add a bunch of additional sports-related books for them to choose from this year!
Each semester, my students complete an independent book project, when they read a book of their choice (usually chosen from my classroom library) and complete various activities to demonstrate their mastery of the standards. These books are sure to be popular choices for this project, and hopefully, they will encourage students to pick up additional books to read, even when they're not explicitly required to do so!
