My Project
Our students are kind, empathetic and all about justice. They care deeply about the world around them, and they are at the age where they are incredibly interested in both history and current events. They like to know why things are the way they are, but also what is happening and what they can do. I teach my students to have a voice and to use it. I teach them to be thinkers and to question (respectfully of course). I also try and teach them empathy and respect for others and how to respectfully raise our voice and speak out for each other when something is wrong.
In our third unit, we study sports and athletes that spoke up for social change.
This unit, students read non-fiction and fiction to learn how ordinary people became great, and overcame great hurdles to get there. They learn how those people then used their voice and prestige to help others, a valuable lesson. These books will allow students to learn about women and men that have changed history. They will have choices to read and these books cater to different sports and genders, so all students will feel included.
