Sports and Sequels: Great Reads for Reluctant Readers
My students need books that get them interested in reading! These sport related books and sequels to popular series will be just what we need to please hard to engage readers.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a Title 1 school and a large majority of our students receive free and reduced lunch. Many of my students come from homes without books and have come to high school with reading and writing levels far below basic. As the school librarian, I try to offer a variety of titles in a wide range of reading levels to tantalize these readers and help them find something they will enjoy.
Many of our students really want to improve their skills and are eager to graduate high school.
Reading for pleasure is the best way to improve their literacy skills but often students with low reading levels view reading as a chore.
My Project
These high interest books will be used to build vocabulary and comprehension. Most are meant to catch their interest and "hook" those reluctant readers who cannot seem to find any book they are willing to finish when assigned a free choice outside reading project. The more time a student spends reading, the more their skills improve. In recent weeks when English classes have visited the library, many of the young men were only interested in sports related books- I quickly ran out of fiction titles that could meet their requests. Soccer is very popular in our community and we just don't have any good fiction books with soccer players. I hope to rectify that with this project. Additionally, there are some soon to be released sequels on this list that students have been begging me to buy! Gotta keep the readers happy!
