Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are an incredibly diverse population. They come from many different cultures and backgrounds. I have many students that have a primary language other than English.
Many of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch; this allows them to have free or reduced-cost breakfast as well, but they are not able to actually get to school early enough every day to utilize this opportunity.
They work incredibly hard and are very attentive. Most of my students are preparing for college, some directly for a career, and a few for the military.
We are trying to create a community of tolerance, acceptance, and compassion within our school and our teams/clubs. The school is so incredibly diverse (religion, ethnicity, socio-economic, single-parent homes, grandparent homes, etc.), with many immigrant families finding our town to be a wonderful, inviting home.
The high school has many varsity sports including football, baseball, basketball, soccer, lacrosse, volleyball, hockey, track and field, gymnastics, swimming, cross country, tennis, softball, wrestling, golf, Special Olympics, dance, and bowling.
I additionally am a co-mentor for the Mechanical Mustangs FIRST Robotics Team. I work with the team on their team attributes awards, business plan, fundraising, and general science applications.
My Project
Every year our school puts on a spooky Halloween performance. We invite the entire town to come and trick or treat in our building and we each have our own section where we are performing.
This upcoming school year, the robotics team would like to perform in a black light setting.
We will be using the tape to create images in the room, areas where we can dance, and an interactive dance room for the younger students. We will be using the LED fingers and strips to highlight different areas and we will be giving away the glow necklaces to the students who attend the dance performance.
We also need Laffy Taffy and Tootsie Rolls to give away like a traditional trick or treating place would do. We had an amazing time last year during our Halloween performances and I look forward to being able to top it this year!
